Point values for each question are as indicated. You may separate the pages of this exam to facilitate working in parallel. Ensure you staple the pages back together before turning in your exam. You may write on the exam paper. Answers for each question must be placed where indicated in the exam. For answers that say show your work: partial credit (points) may be awarded based on the work shown; points may be deducted if you do not show your work, even if the final answer is correct. Write legibly. Any answers or work which cannot be read by the grader will be given 0 points. Answers must follow significant figure rules. Correct units must be provided with numerical answers. Underlined zeros are significant. You will have a total of 50 minutes to complete the written test and complete Part II. Vehicle Testing. Teams will be called up to the vehicle test track individually. One or both members of the team may conduct vehicle testing. For this exam, acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 meters/second².

Question 10

4 pts

Your hovercraft has the maximum ground footprint of 40.0 cm x 40.0 cm. You have decided to maximize your mass score and therefore plan to have your hovercraft carry all 16 rolls of pennies, which have a total mass of 2.00 kg. The expected mass of your vehicle is 1.00 kg. Assuming the air pressure beneath your craft is uniform, what is the minimum static pressure that your blower must produce? Show your work.

Question 11

4 pts

Your hovercraft did not perform well. You are mad. You decide to throw it off the roof of the parking garage, a height of 20 m from the ground. You throw it with a horizontal velocity of 30 m/s and vertical velocity 0.0 m/s. Neglecting air resistance, what is your hovercraft's horizontal and vertical velocity when it hits the ground? Show your work.

PassageFor questions 12–13

For questions 12 and 13, your hovercraft is thrown from the roof of the garage at 45 degrees from the horizontal (i.e. it goes up before it goes down).

Question 13

1 pt

At what point in your hovercraft's trajectory is its acceleration greatest?

Question 14

4 pts

A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 20 m/s. 2.0 seconds later, a stone is thrown vertically (from the same initial height as the ball) with an initial speed of 24 m/s. At what height above the release point will the ball and stone pass each other? Show your work.

Question 15

3 pts

You are lazy and want to use a conveyor belt to transport your hovercraft to impound. Your hovercraft is in a box. You drop the box onto a conveyor belt which is moving at 2.0 m/s. If the coefficient of friction between the box and the belt is 0.30, how long before the box moves without slipping? Show your work.

Question 16

4 pts

When an automobile moves with constant velocity the power developed is used to overcome the frictional forces exerted by the air and the road. If the power developed in an engine is 50.0 hp, what total frictional force acts on the car at 55.0 miles per hour (24.6 m/s)? One horsepower (hp) equals 746 W. Show your work.

Question 17

2 pts

Write the basic equation for kinetic energy of an object as a function of its velocity.

Question 18

2 pts

Choose one of the underlined terms for each. Circle the correct term. Momentum is a (scalar/vector) quantity and kinetic energy is a (scalar/vector) quantity.
